When the weather outside is frightful, whether too hot or too cold, a great indoor activity to get the kids moving is roller skating. Atlanta has several roller skating rinks located throughout the metro area, so if you are thinking where is a skating rink near me, we’ve got you covered.
It was called Starlight Arena. My friend Gina had a royal blue corduroy jacket with the name emblazoned on the back. It made her look like a regular at the skate rink. I was hoping for the same effect with my snow-white skates. The worn grey rentals with the scuffed orange wheels seemed to say, “I’m new here so watch out, I may knock you down.”
It may seem like a blast from the past, but kids still love roller-skating. Atlanta residents may ask where are skating rinks near me? Well, here are several. Got a favorite? Let us know.
Sparkles Skating Rink
Sparkles has several skating rinks on the North side of Atlanta. There is Sparkles Kennesaw, Sparkles Smyrna, Sparkles Hiram and Sparkles Gwinnett. All Sparkles skating locations have public roller skating sessions. The Sparkles Smyrna and Sparkles Gwinnett locations also have adults only skate nights.
In addition to skating, all the locations offer other activities, such as an indoor multi-level, soft and bouncy playground, and an arcade. All locations with the exception of Sparkles Gwinnett offer an awesome program called Tiny Tots where preK age children and younger can bring their favorite ride-on toy to tool around the rink.
All locations, with the exception of Sparkels Smyrna also offer laser tag for the older kids. For coupons, and special events, visit each location’s website. The Frozen and Star Wars nights at Hiram and Kennesaw look pretty cool. Bonus for parents, there is free wi-fi, so you can do a little work while the kids roller skate.

Roller Skating: Atlanta Church Skating Rinks
For a simple skating experience, try a local church that has a large gym. Many offer skating afternoons in the gym. I know we’ve skated at Northside United Methodist Church and Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church.
You don’t need to be a member and sometimes they even have skates you can rent. Although these ‘roller rinks’ aren’t as flashy as the dedicated roller skating rinks, it’s a fun (and inexpensive) afternoon.
Here are three places we’ve visited. Be sure to call before for you go to make sure they are still offering skate nights. Usually these events are seasonal.
Northside United Methodist Church
2799 Northside Dr NW | Atlanta, GA 30305 | (404) 355-6475
On Wednesdays, Northside United Methodist Church hosts open skate, where kids (and adults) can roller skate for free or pay just $1 to rent skates. There is no registration required, just come out and have fun.
Peachtree Presbyterian Church
3434 Roswell Road Northwest | Atlanta, Georgia 30305 |404-842-5800
Peachtree Presbyterian on Roswell Rd., hosts Friday Night Skates. If you don’t have skates or equipment, don’t worry, they have everything you need and it’s included in the $5 admission fee (gym members are free). They provide skates, protective equipment, and helmets if needed or bring your own.
Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church
2715 Peachtree Road NE | Atlanta Georgia 30305 | 404-266-8111
We used to take the kids to Second Ponce to skate on Wednesday afternoons. In addition to skates, they’d have wheeled sleds the kids could scoot around on.
Does your church offer Skate Nights? If so, tell us. We want to know where, when, how much and what it includes.
Ice Skating Atlanta
If you can’t find a roller skating rink near you, you may want to try ice-skating. Atlanta has several seasonal ice-skating rinks. Ice-skating in Atlanta can also be done year round at the Cooler, Alpharetta Ga.
