Boone, North Carolina, is a charming town located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The town is home to Appalachian State University, and its vibrant community offers plenty of things to do — from hiking and camping to shopping and dining.

If you’re looking for a place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, this North Carolina city is the perfect destination. Here are 23+ things to do in Boone NC that you can’t miss.

GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN

Grandfather Mountain consists of two parks: part nature center, managed by Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation and part state park.

The backcountry state park is home to various wildlife, including black bears, deer, river otters, and bald eagles. Visitors can hike, bike, and drive the winding roads that traverse the park, but there are several trails for those interested in getting closer to nature. If you’re interested in camping, this is the section of the mountain where that’s possible.

The Nature Center side of Grandfather Mountain is home to the Mile High Swinging Bridge, hiking trails, the Nature Center, and more. This is the area we visited and loved.

The Mile High Swinging Bridge is a big draw here, and for good reason. The views are spectacular, and it’s one of those experiences you won’t forget. My advice is to get to the mountain early and head to Mile High Swinging Bridge first thing — the parking lot seems to fill up quickly.

There are also lots of great family-friendly hikes here! We took on the Black Rock Trail and loved it. The hike is through the forest and seems to dead end into a rock — but you climb it! It’s really cool and the views here were awesome too. My goal is to take on the Grandfather Trail one day — I’ve always wanted to do a hike that includes ladders!

The Wilson Center for Nature Discovery was a huge hit for the kids. They were both obsessed with the interactive wind machines — it was so great. There is so much to see and do at this fun museum, and you’re learning so much without even realizing it.

Additionally, the Wildlife Habitats here are really neat. We saw eagles, bears, elk, and river otters.

Bring a picnic! There are lots of great picnic areas throughout the park. You can also grab something to eat at the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery at Mildred’s Grill. Grab a seat on the deck!

MYSTERY HILL

Mystery Hill is a unique attraction that offers visitors the chance to experience the laws of physics in a fun and hands-on way. The property features several optical illusions, gravity-defying hills, and even an ax-throwing range. Mystery Hill is perfect for families with kids of all ages.

You’ll also find three museums on the property, including a museum of Native American artifacts, a museum of local history, and a historic farmyard.

THE CASCADE TRAIL

Conveniently located along the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Cascade Trail is a popular spot for hikers and mountain bikers. The trail winds its way through the forest, providing stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The hike to the summit is moderate, making it the perfect activity for weekend warriors.

The highlight of this trail, as the name implies, is a series of 10 waterfalls that cascade down the mountain. Be sure to bring your camera!

Snow tubing is a popular activity at Sugar Mountain Resort, and the town also offers ice skating and snowshoeing. If you’re looking for something a little more low-key, why not take a scenic sleigh ride through the mountains?

APPALACHIAN SKI MOUNTAIN

Appalachian Ski Mountain is the largest ski resort in North Carolina, and it offers something for everyone. The novice slopes are perfect for those just starting out, while the more experienced skiers will enjoy the black diamond runs. There’s also a terrain park for those who want to test their skills on obstacles and jumps.

The site has been operating for over 50 years, and its historic charm is part of what makes it so special. When you’re not hitting the slopes, check out the on-site restaurant, which gained a reputation for serving up hearty mountain fares.

TWEETSIE RAILROAD
