You might want to spontaneously burst into song like Julie Andrews, because the hills are alive and the hotels are awesome in picturesque Alpine Helen. I think hotels have personalities, just like travel companions. Some are lively and a little loud. Others are thoughtful and romantic.

HELENDORF RIVER INN AND CONFERENCE CENTER

Kitschy and cozy accommodations are available at the Helendorf River Inn for guests who want to strap on the lederhosen and walk to experience Helen’s 50-year Oktoberfest tradition, sampling beers and eating sausages on sticks along the scenic Chattahoochee River. I need a giant pretzel and an accordion, stat!

Just steps away from the pet-friendly Helendorf is Helen’s very own Festhalle, where you and your four-legged friend can celebrate the oldest running Oktoberfest in the United States. Get matching costumes and join the parade to officially usher in the traditional Bavarian event. Plan a scenic stay in Helen soon and start practicing your polka moves now.

Celebrating its 45th year as a mountain community hotel with a Bavarian flourish, the Helendorf offers access to a wide array of attractions, ranging from Native American burial sites, to wineries, to specialty and import shops offering everything from candle making to cuckoo clocks. At the Helendorf, there’s always something “Wunderbar” to do!

HAMPTON INN HELEN

Like my sister always says, we put the fun in dysfunctional. Bring your perfect family to the Hampton Inn Helen for a casual and relaxing stay. The popular franchise hotel has everything you expect and more. The waterfront property has comfortable benches and swings located along the scenic Chattahoochee River along with an outdoor pool and a fitness center. Just one block off the main drag, the Hampton is close to downtown attractions but far enough away from the noise to hear the river rush by.

It’s perfect for families. With connecting riverfront accommodations, parents can stay up a little later enjoying their whirlpool suite’s balcony views with a celebratory cocktail from the onsite bar while the kids sleep safely and soundly in their own adjoining room.

BREAKFAST AND MORE AT HAMPTON INN HELEN

When those toddlers, tweens and teens wake up hungry, a full (and free) hot breakfast will be ready and waiting near the lobby. Fun fact: Hampton was the first hotel brand to offer guests the chance to bake their own waffles. Now, kids of all ages can choose a classic malted vanilla waffle or pick from yummy blueberry, chocolate, banana bread and cinnamon roll flavors.

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, so bear with me. A few special items rotate out daily, like Wednesdays find biscuits with gravy, scrambled eggs and sausage links. Every day, you can always eat your fill from the famous waffle station, a classic cereal station, a fresh juice bar, healthy fruit, toasted bagels, fresh baked pastries, nutritious oatmeal and southern grits.

Breakfast is important and can even be educational.  After your meal, stop by Nora Mill Granary (less than two miles away) and check out the authentic gristmill. I was lucky enough to hear the miller tell his tale. Tommy Martin was happy to share his fascinating story and explain the grits making process. Find out what whole grain really means and see the massive water wheel churning on the Chattahoochee River out back. It also makes a great photo opp.

After a day exploring, here is another great hotel perk that children and adults will love. Get free fresh baked cookies at the front desk from 3pm-10pm. Both coffee and juice bars are open 24/7. If the kids accidentally get dirty and wet, laundry is also available onsite. Plus, parking and Wi-Fi are free.

If you’re planning an early morning waterfall hike at Anna Ruby Falls, (which you definitely should) grab a complimentary On-the-Run breakfast bag with an apple, a Nutri Grain breakfast bar and a bottle of water to enjoy on the trail. I am obsessed with waterfalls and this one is such an easy hike with a big payoff at the top. Here’s a photo for motivation.

The Hampton Inn is close to many attractions, like Alpine Mini Golf and Helen Tubing & Waterpark The Bavarian-style hotel features one and two-room suites, equipped with whirlpool tubs, fireplaces, and kitchenettes.

UNICOI STATE PARK & LODGE

Channel your outdoorsy adventurer with a stay in a rustic lodge, a quirky barrel cabin or a luxury safari tent at Unicoi State Park

Want to get away from the crowd and spend quality time with your group? Book one of the 29 well-appointed cabins located across the 1,050-acre property with stunning views and privacy on Smith Creek, a peaceful tributary of the Chattahoochee River that winds from the base of the Anna Ruby falls to Unicoi Lake and is a celebrated trout fishing spot.

Discover an array of outdoor adventure and relaxation opportunities including archery and target shooting, fly fishing, paddle boarding, boat rentals, zip lining, mountain biking or simply lounging lakeside on the beach.

Give glamping a go. Combining luxury and the great outdoors, the extra spacious completely furnished safari tents give large families or groups of friends the extra space they need to glamp in comfort. All sites include beds, a Keurig coffee maker, mini fridge, rugs, lamps, a scent diffuser and electrical outlets, a ceiling fan, and even a residential air conditioning/heating unit.

Glampsites also include two hammocks, a wood fire ring, a charcoal grill with a cooking grate, string lights, two camp chairs, and a picnic table.

The comfortable lodge has 96 cozy, hotel-style rooms with access to restaurants and amenities. Just two miles northeast of Alpine Helen in the gorgeous North Georgia Mountains is the ultimate mountain retreat destination. Unicoi State Park & Lodge is centered around beautiful Lake Unicoi within the Chattahoochee National Forest. The park offers unparalleled hiking trails leading to Anna Ruby Falls and Helen.

SMITH CREEK TAVERN AT UNICOI LODGE

Lounge in the lodge after a day of adventure. Reward yourself with dinner at Smith Creek Tavern, named for the mountain stream that runs through Unicoi State Park. The welcoming  local tavern seamlessly integrates an upscale, modern dining room with rustic flair and a full-size bar.

Indulge in regional favorites and authentic German platters, paying homage to Helen’s Bavarian heritage. Order a Bavarian jumbo pretzel like this one and don’t miss the Unicoi strudel with a rich caramel sauce.

Treat your palate to a little more adventure with flights of local and regional craft beer, as well as sipping Georgia’s distilled liquors. After a quiet day in the woods, the lodge’s generous entertainment area includes plenty of space for live music, pool and shuffleboard along with five 65″ televisions to celebrate the day’s bucket list goals.

NEARBY ADVENTURES

For the ultimate tasting adventure, travel about four miles and take a moonshine canopy tour at Nacoochee Adventures. Fly through the gorgeous forest and over abandoned moonshine stills like this left in the forest when the revenuers got wind that something was brewing.

Take a friend and a shot of liquid courage (local and legal moonshine) after you both glide down The Intimidator, a half mile dual zipline. My brave friend Ruth and I stepped onto the platform with a spectacular view of Mount Yonah. I’m not going to lie. I was more than a little intimidated when that platform started to sway a little beneath my feet.  But look, we gave it our best shot and took a shot of moonshine at the end of the line.
