Celebrate Chattanooga as the First National Park City in North America

Chattanooga has officially been designated as North America’s first National Park City, joining London and Adelaide in this global movement. This recognition celebrates the city’s commitment to integrating nature into urban life, promoting outdoor activities, and preserving green spaces.

Celebrate Chattanooga as the First National Park City in North America

The journey to this achievement began in late 2023, driven by the collective efforts of thousands of residents, community leaders, businesses, and nonprofit organizations. The city gathered over 5,600 signatures in support and developed a National Park City charter focused on seven core commitments to people, place, and nature. In November 2024, Chattanooga submitted its “Journey Book,” a comprehensive showcase of the city’s dedication to creating a livable and sustainable urban environment.

In March 2025, representatives from the National Park City Foundation visited Chattanooga to experience firsthand the city’s parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and urban landscapes. Their positive assessment led to the official designation on April 3, 2025. Mayor Tim Kelly expressed pride in this accomplishment, stating, “The outdoors is our competitive advantage. It’s at the heart of our story of revitalization, and it’s core to our identity.”

To celebrate this milestone, Chattanooga will host an event on Saturday, April 19, from 12 PM to 7 PM at the Chattanooga Green next to Ross’s Landing. The celebration will feature local artists and a presentation by Dr. Daniel Raven Ellison, the creator of the National Park City movement. This event coincides with Earth Week, during which over 50 activities and events are planned across the city.

This designation not only honors Chattanooga’s natural beauty but also reflects the community’s dedication to fostering a healthier, greener, and more connected urban environment.
