Tour of Goat Farm Atlanta Arts Center

Note: The Goat Farm Arts Center is currently in the middle of a redevelopment project and is expected to reopen in Spring 2024.

Do you remember The Hunger Games movies? Of course you do! Well, Goat Farm Atlanta is the filming location of District 12 from The Hunger Games films — not an actual goat farm.

If you’re a fan like me, you’ve got to see The Goat Farm in person.

The Goat Farm served as District 12 in the second Hunger Games movie where Katniss, Gale and Peeta resided. If you recall, District 12 was the smallest and poorest of the 13 districts. Scenes from The Walking Dead were also filmed here.

Located in the West Midtown area of Atlanta, Georgia, the Goat Farm is not just a film location, it is also home to several art studios and it’s a wonderful place to let the kids let off some steam while you snap a few shots. They also hold special events here throughout the year.

GOAT FARM ATLANTA HAS AN INTERESTING HISTORY

The Goat Farm was built during the 1800s, opening in 1889 to build machinery for cotton gins. During World War II, it was used as a factory to produce ammunition and mortar. In the 1970s, it became artists studios for a short period.

In 2010, it was bought by real estate developers to renovate as a residential/commercial complex. The economic downturn saved the structures and the developers got a little creative, and instead developed the site into a Center for Visual and Performing Arts.

Unless you are here for a scheduled performance, a visit is more about exploring the old factory site. A photographer friend of mine calls it ‘her studio,’ as the photos here practically take themselves.

Afterwards, head to Westside Urban Market for some modern day boutique shopping and lunch. Westside has some of my favorite restaurants, including West Egg Café, and Taqueria del Sol.
