Yard Goals: Why Atlanta Is Going All-In on Outdoor Living

If you’ve driven through any in-town neighborhood lately and noticed a suspicious number of raised garden beds, pergolas under construction, or patios so polished they belong in a Nancy Meyers movie—you’re not imagining things. Atlanta has officially entered its Outdoor Living Era.

According to Thumbtack’s new Curb Appeal Report, ATL cracked the top five cities investing the most in outdoor upgrades this year. And no, we’re not just talking about re-mulching the flower beds. Think backyard kitchens, climate-controlled greenhouses, full-blown porch remodels—possibly financed by people willing to go into debt for the privilege.

Yes, really. Thumbtack’s survey (backed by Zillow data and the opinions of 1,000+ homeowners) found that a jaw-dropping 71% would consider going into debt for their dream yard. That’s some serious lawn love.

Here’s the vibe:

  • One in three folks now consider their yard a personal sanctuary.
  • 60% have bailed on social plans just to hang out in their outdoor space.
  • And the dream features topping wish lists? Try a resort-style pool, a pizza oven-equipped outdoor kitchen, or even space for a chicken coop.

Atlanta’s Outdoor Obsession, Explained

So what’s behind the surge? Chalk it up to a mix of Southern hospitality and the lingering desire for “more space” that COVID times stirred up. But also, let’s be real—having a flex-worthy backyard in Atlanta isn’t just nice, it’s a strategy. When your summers are long and your spring and fall last more than a week, that yard earns its keep.

We’ve seen it play out: Intown bungalows turning their front porches into screened sanctuaries. Grant Park patios becoming dinner party central. Even modest lots are squeezing in vertical gardens or sleek decks made for lounging.

What’s Trending (and What It’ll Cost You)

According to Zillow, the most popular outdoor upgrades this year are:

  • Patios – $4,598 average (aka the new dining room)
  • Fences – $3,314 (privacy, yes, but also style points)
  • Pools – From $1,500 to $85K+ (inflatable doesn’t count)
  • Detached garages – $16K–$37K (because where else are you going to store the pizza oven?)

The trends skew dreamy but not impractical. We’re talking garden plots, climate-controlled greenhouses, and even outdoor spaces built for movie nights under the stars (giant patio TV, anyone?).

The “CountryCore” of It All

Interestingly, the report also flags a rise in searches for properties with “barns,” “farms,” and “horses”—proof that #CountryCore is bleeding into real estate and renovation decisions. Half of homeowners surveyed have dreamed of owning a farm, and more than half say they’d trade city convenience for more land.

It’s a little bit Little House, a little bit “what if we had goats?” And honestly, in a metro where you can drive 40 minutes and end up surrounded by pasture, it kind of makes sense.

Not All Trends Are Welcome

Every yard revolution has its downsides. Thumbtack says inflatable holiday decorations are earning major side-eye (27% of folks are over them). Faux grass is divisive, and that mega screen on the patio? Depending on your neighbor, it’s either “movie night magic” or an eyesore.

Still—The Outdoor Life Is Calling

Whether you’re just upgrading your patio furniture or going full Hardscaping Hero, the point is clear: outdoor living isn’t just a trend in Atlanta—it’s a lifestyle now. And for a city that already spends half the year in shorts, we’re pretty well suited for it.

So bring a citronella candle, maybe a folding chair. The lawn party’s just getting started.
