Outside Includes Two SE Hikes as “Most Beautiful” in the US

When we’re traveling, I spend hours scouring AllTrails and local blogs to find the most beautiful hikes. Luckily, Outside made it a little easier by highlighting what they believe are the 10 most beautiful hikes in the US.

Two of the hikes they suggest are in the Southeast. One is in Florida and the other in North Carolina.

If you’re heading that way and love a good trail like we do… here are the deets.

The First 30 Miles of the Florida Trail, Florida

Most of this segment of the trail is located on dikes along the east side of the Kissimmee River and Lake Okeechobee, and it’s said to be the most difficult part of the trail.

You’ll be trekking through swamp and muddy marl. Your hiking companions? Alligators by the dozens, black panthers, black bears and venomous snakes.

Also – this water can’t be filtered. So you’ll need to pack your own; a filter straw won’t cut it. And there are no take-out points… so once you’re in, you’re committed.

Your adventure begins at Big Cypress National Preserve… be sure to check in so they know you are out there (though rescues are very limited and very costly.)

If you’re still reading this, know that Outside shares that the real value of this trail is in knowing that you did it!

Outside suggests that this trail offers the grandest views for the shortest hike (1.5 miles total).

While I’ve not been, this video from AshevilleTrails does a good job proving the point.

If you want to extend your hike in this area, Outside recommends heading to Hot Springs. The point-to-point is a little over 19 miles.

If you’re looking for more inspiration, head over to see the other eight hikes.
