North Alabama Glamping and Waterfall Getaway

This article is part of our daily Regional Highlights series which features unique businesses, attractions and events around the South (outside of Georgia.)

Timberline Glamping Company has been growing steadaily since they started their Georgia-glamping roots in 2018. I remember our first outing with them at their Shady Grove Campground location on Lake Lanier.

It was one of the best glamping experiences I’ve ever had (even to date!) So when I heard that they had recently opened two new locations in North Alabama, I had to share.

Lake Guntersville State Park

Lake Guntersville is closest to Atlanta (under 3 hours). Pick from a standard tent with a king bed or 2 double beds… or the deluxe tent with a larger porch and bunkbeds (like above.)

Because you’re on the lake, one of the add ons available is a kayak (youth also available) or SUP. All these options include a life vest, and the one-price rental is for your entire stay.

When we stayed at the Lake Lanier campground, we rented kayaks. I have to say, it was one of my favorite parts of the experience. Heading out on the lake with the boys at dusk, seeing the fireflies, was pretty darn special.

DeSoto Falls

Since you’re on the lake, there are not any waterfalls right near your campsite. However, I suggest you make a pit stop on the way there (and heck, on the way back, too.) It’s on the way if you take the route through Summerville and Menlo.

DeSoto Falls is one of the most photographed places in Alabama. It’s also one of the tallest (107 ft.) and most visited waterfall locations in the state.

There is a short trail, an overlook, and a picnic area… but every time I’ve been (6-8 times) there are tons of people lounging in the little pools made by the waterfall. Heaven.

Monte Sano State Park

Just a bit farther is Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville, with another Timberline location. We love love LOVE Huntsville and especially this park.

We love hiking here, and there are bike trails also. You’ll find a Japanese garden, planetarium, and a disc golf course!

You’ll find standard, double and deluxe tents here. Again, the deluxe cabins have a king and 2 bunkbeds (4 beds) so that’s what to get if you’re bringing the family.

Special add ons at this location include a pop up gazebo (perfect for little ones or high-mosquito weather), a Blackstone griddle (wow!!!), or a disc golf starter set.

Wagon Trail and High Trail Loop

There are several waterfalls in the area, but our favorite is in Monte Sano Preserve (adjacent to the park). It’s called the Wagon Trail and High Trail Loop and it’s a loop of about 4.5 miles.

It should take you only about 10 minutes to drive to the trailhead, and you can plan on the hike taking 2-2.5 hours.
