Louisville Mega Cavern hosts the world’s only fully underground Zip Lines & Adventure Tour, the world’s only fully underground aerial ropes challenge course, as well as a 10-stories-underground Historic Tram Tour.
This isn’t a natural cave situation, which would surely put a damper on any sort of attraction development for preservation reasons. Rather, Louisville Mega Cavern developed as a limestone mine in the 1930’s which has allowed for massive expansion of the underground facility over the years for reasons you may not expect.
The cavern’s have recently revamped their underground zip-lining experience to include neone lights, lasers and music. Find out more below.

We’ve visited the caverns during our trip to Louisville and had a blast. It quite different than the cave experiences we were used to. The caverns are host to not only the attractions, but an entire underground storage facility for the government and high-risk businesses. It’s enormous.
Here’s a few facts on the caverns:
- The mine goes under all 10 lanes of the Watterson Expressway (I-264).
- The portion of the mine under I-264 was quarried before the highway was built in the early 1930’s.
- The Mega Cavern is approximately 100 acres large.
- Mega Cavern is classified by the Metro Louisville Government and the State of Kentucky as a building. As a matter of fact, it is the largest building in the State of Kentucky and has been given its own building code.
And that’s only a few. Read more about the history of the caverns here.
But the big news this year surrounds the revamping of their world famous underground zip line with new lights and sound.
From the Louisville Mega Caverns – “Get ready for an all-new, unforgettable neon zip-lining experience at the Louisville Mega Cavern! Our Neon Rush Ziplines will feature visually interactive elements and surprises along every zip,” said Charles Park, Louisville Mega Cavern Executive Vice President.
“We are excited for guests to experience ziplining through Louisville Mega Cavern in a whole new way, with neon lights, music and exhilarating lasers to marvel at as you zip through the caverns.”
