Many nature-lovers in Georgia know about Len Foote Hike Inn (probably one of my favorite places in the state)… but did you know there is also something similar in the Smoky Mountains?
LeConte Lodge sits on Mount LeConte, the third highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at 6,593 feet.
Although LeConte Lodge is now under the jurisdiction of the NPS, it predates the national park’s establishment in 1934 – and in fact it turns 100 years old this year!!
THAT is why it’s such a great time to hike now… and lucky you, the season just opened this past Monday!
There are six hikes to the Lodge, the shortest being 5 miles and the longest being 9.1 miles. Keep in mind that these are not easy hikes, though. They include a ton of elevation change, and the weather can get iffy many times of the year.
You are welcome to “day hike” to the top… but be prepared to hike about 8 hours or more (round trip) on the shorter hike. Snack lunches, baked goods and pit toilets are available at the Lodge.
Of course, staying at the lodge is always better!
Things book quickly here… many of the most desirable dates are already taken but you can still find some weekday openings and there is a waitlist you can join.
If nothing else, put a note in your fall calendar when 2025 reservations open up!
