Construction kicked off last month on what will become the longest paved trail in the United States, the Hi-Lo Trail. This trail will span an impressive 211 miles when completed, stretching from Athens to Tybee Island.
The groundbreaking ceremony in Sandersville, GA marked the beginning of Phase 1. This first segment, a 2.2-mile stretch, is being developed in the Forest Grove Preserve, a site recognized as both a Georgia Centennial Farm and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Vision Behind the Hi-Lo Trail
The Hi-Lo Trail is expected to be a transformative infrastructure project that will connect and empower rural communities across eight counties in Georgia: Greene, Hancock, Washington, Johnson, Emanuel, Bulloch, Effingham, and Chatham.
Once completed, the trail will stretch from Union Point to Savannah, providing a continuous paved path for walking, biking, and more.
Phases of Construction
The construction of the Hi-Lo Trail is divided into multiple phases, with the initial phase focusing on the Washington County Model Project in Sandersville. This first segment runs from Ridge Road Elementary, located north of Forest Grove Preserve, to the southern end of the property. Future phases will extend the trail through the remaining counties, with the entire project expected to take several years to complete, contingent on funding and construction progress.
The comprehensive plan for the Hi-Lo Trail was developed in collaboration with the PATH Foundation, which has a history of supporting trail initiatives that promote community wellness and economic development.
Greta deMayo, Executive Director of PATH Foundation, highlighted the broader impact of the trail, stating, “We see how trails promote community prosperity and wellness – from spurring economic development and offering alternative transportation options to creating safe, peaceful greenspaces that nurture physical and emotional health”
Economic and Community Impact
The Hi-Lo Trail is expected to significantly impact the communities it traverses. By connecting rural areas to larger urban centers, the trail will boost economic opportunities, foster tourism, and enhance the quality of life for the residents in those communities.
The development of the trail aligns with broader goals of promoting sustainable and healthy lifestyles, offering a scenic route for physical activities, and providing educational and cultural enrichment through its arboretum and historical sites.
The project also includes initiatives aimed at engaging local youth and fostering a culture of cycling and outdoor recreation. One such program, the Kids Bike League, serves children within the eight-county region, providing access to bikes and opportunities to participate in cycling activities.
Future Prospects and Community Involvement
As the Hi-Lo Trail progresses, community involvement and support will be crucial to its success. The project has garnered significant attention and enthusiasm from local residents, government officials, and various stakeholders.
The full completion of the Hi-Lo Trail will connect to Athen’s existing 38-mile Firefly Trail, creating an extensive network of paved trails that will stand as a testament to Georgia’s commitment to outdoor recreation and community connectivity.
The Hi-Lo Trail is more than a construction project; it is a symbol of hope and progress for the communities of rural Georgia. As work continues, the trail promises to leave a lasting legacy, enriching the lives of those who live along its path and inspiring future generations to embrace the outdoors and the spirit of adventure.
