Macon, in partnership with six other cities just launched a brand new tourism trail that spans more than 90 miles in the heart of Georgia. There are over 50 historical stops along the way that cover so many areas of Georgia’s rich history, the good the bad and the ugly.
Georgia’s Trail of Legacy and Lore covers Macon, Athens, Oconee, Madison, Eatonton, Milledgeville, and Gray-old Clinton.
From Visit Macon, “Georgia’s Trail of Legacy & Lore tells the stories of history, events and unique architectural, literary, musical, design, and artistic endeavors of periods ranging from the earliest indigenous communities to Georgia’s iconic music scenes of the nineteen seventies and eighties. From the early frontier days and the Civil War to the Civil Rights era, the unforgettable stories and traditions of this region of Georgia connect visitors to the past and are brought to life all along Georgia’s Trail of Legacy & Lore.”
Just a few of the many destinations on the trail include the Athens Music Walk of Fame, the home of Flannery O’Conner, the Elder Mill Covered Bridge, the Morgan County African American Museum and so much more.
The site includes an interactive map, and other pages where you can filter by area, or destination categories like Cultural Arts, Heritage, and Architecture.
The long trail with numerous stops is surely one you’ll want to take in sections, but what a great bucket list! As long-time travel writer’s in the Atlanta area we had thought we’d seen it all, but there are so many great locations that we have yet to visit. Do it!
