New Study Ranks Best (& Worst!) Cities to Walk Your Dog

Where can you find the most impressive trails and safe conditions for dog walking in the United States? Well, according to a new study…not Atlanta. (Although, Atlanta wasn’t the worst either!)

New Study Ranks Best (& Worst!) Cities to Walk Your Dog

To mark National Walk Your Dog Day on February 22, LawnStarter ranked 2024’s Best Cities to Walk Your Dog. They compared nearly 480 of the biggest U.S. cities based on four categories.

They looked at access to dog-friendly trails and off-leash parks, positive ratings for dog-friendly trails and parks, dog walking services, and safety, using 17 total metrics.

So which cities ranked high, which ranked low, and where was Atlanta in all this?

The Top 10 best U.S. cities to walk your dog in 2024 are…

  1. Colorado Springs, CO
  2. San Francisco, CA
  3. Phoenix, AZ
  4. Boulder, CO
  5. New York, NY
  6. Portland, OR
  7. Boise, ID
  8. Oakland, CA
  9. Las Vegas, NV
  10. Burbank, CA

Cities like Colorado Springs, Colorado (No. 1), San Francisco (No. 2), and Phoenix (No. 3) ranked highly because they offer plentiful paths for taking dogs on a walk. In general, Western cities trotted to the top of the rankings, thanks to their vetted pup-friendly trails.

According to the study, the Top 10 worst U.S. cities to walk your dog in 2024 are…

468. Davenport, IA
469. Kansas City, KS
470. Montgomery, AL
471. Rockford, IL
472. Evansville, IN
473. Macon, GA
474. Warner Robins, GA
475. Memphis, TN
476. Avondale, AZ
477. Pompano Beach, FL

The cities that ranked the worst mainly tanked on having access to lots of pet-friendly trails and/or trails that were ranked positively.

So where did Atlanta fall in the rankings? Out of the 477 U.S. cities studied, Atlanta came in at #284. A breakdown of Atlanta’s score looked like this:

  • A ranking of 51 on access to pet-friendly trails
  • For quality of trails, Atlanta ranked with an 84
  • Atlanta scored a 66 on access to professional dog-walking services
  • And Atlanta got a rating of 465 on safety

So basically, Atlanta is a pet-friendly city, but there are some major safety concerns (judged on pedestrian fatalities and overall crime rate) that brought the city’s overall score down.
