Let’s be honest: if you’ve lived in Atlanta long enough, you know our relationship with outdoor fun is… complicated.
We’ve got parks galore, but they’re often “just 15 minutes away” (read: 45 with traffic). The BeltLine? Equal parts dream and congestion depending on the time of day. And yet—WalletHub just ranked us the 4th best city in the country for recreation.

Turns out, the numbers don’t lie.
Here’s what Atlanta’s working with:
- 🥇 #1 in spending on parks and recreation per capita
(We don’t just talk about it—we put our money where our splash pads are.) - 🏊♀️ #1 in swimming pools per capita
Yes, even if half of them require detective work to find or a cousin with a guest pass. - 🎾 #4 in tennis courts per capita
Pickleballers, your rise is coming for this stat. - 🎸 #12 in music venues per capita
From Cellairis Amphitheatre to that one backyard setup in East Atlanta, we know how to throw a show. - 🚲 #20 in bike rental facilities
Which would be even better if the city didn’t act like every cyclist has a death wish. - 👟 #39 in walkable park access
Not perfect, but when we do find our way to a green space? It’s usually worth the detour.
Vegas took the top spot (because of course it did—pool parties, playgrounds, and a shocking number of basketball hoops). Cincinnati and Orlando edged us out too, thanks to their own mix of green space, affordability, and unexpected rec cred. Still, we’re in very good company—and we’ve got way more tree canopy. Just saying.
This July, go see your city.
It’s National Parks and Recreation Month. You don’t need a grand plan.
Just…
- Grab a folding chair
- Find some shade
- Let the city surprise you
Because Atlanta’s not just climbing the rankings—it’s showing us, sweaty and all, that fun can be part of the everyday. And if you’re lucky, maybe even around the next corner.
