If your idea of a beach trip involves more than just sunscreen and a soggy paperback, Navarre Beach is rolling out the tide-washed welcome mat for families who want something with a little more heart—and a lot more habitat conservation.
Tucked away in Florida’s panhandle, Navarre bills itself as “Florida’s Most Relaxing Place,” which it is—if your version of relaxing includes rescuing sea turtles, painting with tortoises, and identifying mollusks like you’re on a Discovery Channel internship.

This summer, the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center (NBSTCC) is running a lineup of eco-experiences that feel less like museum visits and more like real-life animal encounters with a sprinkle of science camp energy.
At the center of it all is Sweet Pea, a rescued green sea turtle with full ambassador duties. She greets guests, stars in educational programs, and quietly represents what’s at stake if marine conservation efforts stall. The NBSTCC has removed more than 1,400 pounds of marine debris from local shores every year since 2013—numbers that feel even heavier when you realize what they mean for Sweet Pea’s wild cousins.
For families or couples wanting to lean into the conservation angle without sacrificing a good time, SpringHill Suites Navarre Beach has a Turtle Time Family Stay Package.
The package includes the following:
- Four tickets to the Sea Turtle Conservation Center (guests reserve online)
- A Sea Turtle Goody Bag at check-in with:
- Four turtle light sticker covers
- One stuffed turtle
- One “Sweet Pea” turtle book
- One turtle sticker from the CVB
- One turtle magnet featuring four species from the conservation center
- Educational flyers on being a Sea Turtle Hero
- One drawstring backpack with SHS and Navarre Beach logos
But the standout here is Painting Tortoise Tracks, an event where guests coax a tortoise named Safari across a paint-dabbed canvas using snacks. Yes, it’s adorable. Yes, you get to keep the painting. And yes, Safari seems to know exactly how photogenic he is.
Other programs round out the eco-edutainment menu:
- Honorary Animal Care Team Member: a behind-the-scenes tour and feeding session where you join the caretakers for a morning.
- Shark School: includes a Gulf-focused shark lesson, a tooth treasure hunt, and a very enthusiastic certificate of completion.
- Marine Mammal School: hands-on learning about dolphins, whales, and other big-brained swimmers.
- Seashell School: teaches kids (and grownups) how to identify mollusks and collect shells without wrecking the shoreline.
Each class runs under two hours, includes early entry to the center, and ends with an assortment of themed take-home goodies. All that, and it’s reasonably priced—most sessions fall between $15–$75 depending on the activity.
Additional eco-experiences in the area include snorkeling at the artificial reefs at the Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary, exploring the renowned Gulf Islands National Seashore, kayaking or hiking at Blackwater River State Park and boutique RV camping at the Hideaway Retreat.
Sure, Navarre’s got the soft sand, the warm Gulf breeze, and the sleepy charm you expect from a smaller coastal town. But it’s also quietly become one of the most hands-on, low-key conservation destinations for families.
Programs are filling up, especially during nesting season, so early booking isn’t just a good idea—it’s your best shot at snagging a seat next to Safari’s canvas.
