AstroTourism: Like An Affordable Trip To Space

This article is part of our daily Regional Highlights series which features unique businesses, attractions and events around the South (outside of Georgia.)

AstroTourism is a type of travel that people have been enjoying for years, but it’s recently been given it’s own unique moniker. Personally, I love the idea because it makes it easier to find those special places.

Like, say, the Crystal Coast, for example.

Ok – it’s not exactly like a trip to space, but it’s as close as many of us will ever come.

The Crystal Coast is the affectionate name for the southern tip of The Outer Banks. It includes Cape Lookout National Seashore, which happens to be the first Atlantic coast Dark Sky International Park!

This prestigious accolade was given in no small part to the work of the Crystal Coast Stargazers. Be sure to follow them on Facebook to learn about programs happening while you visit.

They offer Star Parties, Astronomy Nights, and more.

The next Star Party is in early May. Events are free including an astrophotography workshop, public stargazing opportunities, astronomy activities for kids, and more.

Starlight cruises are available also but it is not free. The cost is nominal, though, and it is more than worth the price.

You’ll hop on the ferry from Harkers Island Visitor Center to Cape Lookout Lighthouse. At the lighthouse you’ll enjoy a laser-pointed tour of the night sky by a Nasa Solar System Ambassador. The only lights on South Core Banks will be the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. Wild, right?
