It wasn’t a rock…it was a Rock Lobster!
Athens has chosen a name for their new minor league hockey team, and the new name pays homage to the legendary B-52’s. You’ll be able to welcome the Rock Lobsters to the ice in 2024!
Athens Professional Hockey, a member of the Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL), has announced its new team name: Rock Lobsters. This vibrant name was chosen after a comprehensive community vote, collaborating inspiration of designs from local artists, and an emerging partnership with the legendary band, the B-52’s.
With over 8,000+ participants in the voting on the team name, it has caused controversy as the rival name presented was Classic City Panic in honor of another music tribute from Athens, WideSpread Panic. Yet that hasn’t stopped fan groups to pop up for both names and ultimately was out voted by only a margin of 565 total votes.
“From the start, we knew we wanted a name that encapsulates the unique energy and spirit of Athens,” said Britton Briley, Director of Marketing for the Rock Lobsters. “The response from the community was incredible. The name ‘Rock Lobsters’ struck a chord with our fans, blending music, creativity, and a touch of humor. It’s the perfect identity for our hockey team.”
The newest professional hockey team even have The B52’s full support with the name paying homage to their Athens legacy.
A statement from the band reads “Athens, Georgia is our birthplace and where we started our journey “down the Atlanta Highway” to spread our home grown groove out to the universe. ‘Rock Lobster’ was one of our very first songs and we can testify that millions in the galaxy have gone wild to this deep sea surf anthem. We are truly honored to have our hometown hockey team named the Rock Lobsters. As the song declares ‘Let’s rock!’ “
With the new team name officially announced, the Rock Lobsters are gearing up for an exciting season with opening day being October 26th, 2024.
