What are your favorite (free or cheap) family road trip games?
Not only is it hysterical to read the stories, but kids learn the parts of speech. You can find a these with multiple topics, too. My boys love the Star Wars-themed ones.
Begin with the letter A. Each person takes a turn finding a word on a road sign or billboard that begins with the chosen letter. Move through the alphabet taking turns.
CITY, COUNTRY, RIVER
For every letter of the alphabet, name a city, country and river that start with that letter. For example ‘S’ could be City: Salzburg, Country: Sweden, River: Shenandoah.
I SPY
Find something in the car and have the others guess what it is you found by asking yes/no questions. I spy with my little eye….something blue, round, smooth, etc.
Print several different Bingo Sheets. As you see signs on your road trip, cross them off. Winner is first to fill a row or the card, depending on the length of the trip.
Build a progressive story with a catch – each person adds a sentence to the story, but must start that sentence with fortunately or unfortunately, alternating as you go.
FORTUNATLEY/UNFORTUNATLEY
20 QUESTIONS
You have 20 questions to figure out what somebody else in the car is thinking. Start broad and get more specific as you go – Is it an animal, vegetable or mineral? Furry, green, or hard?
COWS ON MY SIDE
This one sharpens your math skills. Count the cows on your side of the road. Pass a cemetery, lose all your cows and start over.
TABLE TOPICS
Another question game, but there are no hidden agendas, or questions to elicit weird answers, just general conversation starters, like what was your all-time favorite vacation?
The first person goes camping and brings something that begins with A – maybe apples. The second person brings apples, but also something that begins with B -a bandana? And so on.
