The Bourbon Battle is on at Scofflaw Brewing

Scofflaw Brewing Company is putting on a Backyard Bourbon Battle, and you’re invited.

I’m no expert, but I do know a little something about bourbon. For one thing, it takes years in the barrel to get that deep, rich color and complex woody flavor. Two at a minimum, but that’s for a really young, straight bourbon whiskey. Top shelfs are aged in the barrel for at least four or five years.

So how in the Pappy Van Winkle is Scofflaw able to host a bourbon competition on a single day? Find out how they do it, and how you can be a part of it below.

Decent bourbon isn’t just pulled out of the cask and bottled. Each individual cask is not at all the same, and just mixing everything together and bottling would make for very inconsistent results and poor branding.

During our trip to Louisville, KY we learned that master distillers, through careful measurements and tasting, are able to blend the right casks in the right amounts to get that consistent blend for each one of their labels.

This is how distilleries like Maker’s Mark are able to provide products like Maker’s Mark 46, Maker’s Mark 101, and of course, the original liquid gold. In fact, they even offer a Private Selection label that you can blend yourself – but you have to purchase a whole barrel’s worth. Where do I sign up?

So how does the Scofflaw Backyard Bourbon Battle work? A number of teams signed up weeks ago to create their own blends from already-aged casks – pictured below. Once again, where do I sign up?

While you may not be able to compete, you can sure as heck attend, hear more about the competition and how the blends were made, and just more about good ole’ bourbon. But the best part is, you’ll get to participate as one of the judges.

The Backyard Bourbon Battle is on June 15th at 12pm at Scofflaw Brewing in West Midtown. The ticketed event includes bourbon tastings, food from NFA Burger and James Beard award-winning Rodney Scott BBQ, live music, and more.

From Scofflaw – “Join us for an epic showdown at our first-ever Bourbon competition and Festival, where local community teams go head-to-head in the ultimate whiskey barrel-picking challenge. It’s your chance to dive into a variety of unique barrel picks amidst the spirited atmosphere of our very own backyard.

Each team will have selected their own Kentucky Bourbon barrel, which will be sampled at the event. Event goers can cast votes for their favorite, and the team with the most votes will claim the coveted Backyard Bourbon Battle Heavyweight Belt, legendary bragging rights, and win their very own custom bottle. It’s up to YOU to decide the winner!”

Advanced, discounted Tickets are $40 for General Admission and $50 for Red Label, which includes more tastings and your own complimentary bottle. Tickets are also available at the door at a higher price.
