The FREE Science Scavenger Hunt lets you journey along the trails of Mason Mill Park in Decatur in search of special plants, rocks, and other natural features. You and the kids can take a pleasant hike through the peaceful in-town forest, solve riddles, learn about the natural world, and win a prize!

On this scavenger hunt, you will not be gathering items, but instead using the scientific method to solve riddles, complete activities, and obtain clues that allow you to visit seven stations along the Trails of Mason Mill.

What will you need for the scavenger hunt?

  • You’ll need the ability to walk 1.5 miles, including up and down uneven stairs and on single-track dirt trails.
  • You’ll need a smartphone that can scan the QR codes at each of the 7 stations.
  • You’ll need access to the internet on your smartphone so you can do web searches, complete online forms, and take and send photos via text or email.
  • And of course, you’ll need a curious mind that can solve riddles and answer observation-based questions.

The scavenger hunt should take between 1.5-2 hours to complete, so you’ll also want to wear comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, water, and snacks. You can also pick up a trail map at the beginning of your hike at the information kiosk.

Please note that stations #5, #6, and #7 are only accessible by dirt trails, so strollers, wheelchairs, bikes and scooters are not recommended.

The Science Scavenger Hunt will take place during the duration of the Atlanta Science Festival, which takes place from March 9-23. This is one event that will be great for all ages.

After your hunt, check out some more of Atlanta’s best parks and playgrounds!
