The Santaland Diaries: Put a Little Kick in your Holiday Season!

Full of laughs and quite a bit naughtier than nice, The Santaland Diaries at Horizon Theatre makes for a superb Holiday Season date night! It’s a 90 minute one-act show written by NPR comic David Sedaris that tells the day to day story of a middle-aged man who has found seasonal employment as an elf named Crumpet at Macy’s Christmastime Santaland in NYC. Crumpet is being brought to life on stage by Harold M. Leaver, and his sidekicks in the show are Enoch King and Lala Cochran.

The Santaland Diaries is sharp-witted, sarcastic and funny (and definitely not for kids!). Crumpet pokes fun at himself, his co-workers, and all the holiday crazed grown-ups and children that make their way to see Santa Claus. The audience is part of the show at times (warning: do not sit close if you are uncomfortable laughing at yourself or would be unwilling to be pulled on to the stage to participate in the silliness). Huge kudos to sidekicks King and Cochran – both have a great sense of comedic timing, and King has the ability to make the audience laugh uproariously without saying a word. They portray a seemingly endless parade of characters, and are masters of the lightning quick costume change. I can only imagine what the backstage area looks like at the end of the show with all the costumes, props and wigs!

If you have never been to the Horizon Theatre, you will be in for a treat. It’s tucked in the middle of Little Five Points, and is charming and artsy from the minute you walk in the door. The theatre itself is small and intimate, with only 172 seats. Seating is first come, first served, and there really is not a bad seat in the house.

The Santaland Diaries runs November 17 – December 31, 2017. Tickets and information are available at or 404.584.7450.
