If you’re like me, always on the lookout for something fun and fresh to do with the kiddos, then buckle up because Roswell is serving up a summer of pure magic. And no, I’m not talking about the kind of magic that involves pulling rabbits out of hats. I’m talking about puppets, science, and a sprinkle of Shakespearean drama. Intrigued? Let me spill the beans.

First up, let’s chat about the Roswell Summer Puppet Series. This isn’t just any puppet show, folks. It’s a whole festival of creativity and imagination, perfect for those little ones who are always asking “why” and “how.” And trust me, this year, they’ve really outdone themselves.
Kicking things off is “Pinocchio” by That Puppet Guy Productions from June 12-14. Now, I know what you’re thinking—Pinocchio, been there, done that. But hold your horses!
This isn’t your run-of-the-mill wooden boy tale. Imagine thrift store treasures getting a magical makeover. Baskets become crickets, pots turn into foxes, and yes, a puppet dreams of becoming a real boy. It’s a solo “tour de farce” that blends storytelling, mask work, and prop comedy. It’s like watching a magician at work, but with a lot more laughs and zero rabbits.
Next, from June 19-21, we have the Big Thinkers Science Exploration with “It’s Electric!” Now, if your kids are anything like mine, they’re probably obsessed with all things that zap, buzz, and light up. This show is a science lover’s dream.
Picture this: a 50,000-volt Tesla coil sparking, indoor lightning strikes, and a hair-raising generator that will make your hair stand on end—literally. It’s hands-on, it’s thrilling, and it’s the kind of science class we all wish we had in school. Plus, there’s plenty of audience participation, so your little Einsteins can get right in on the action.
And for those of you who want to introduce your kids to the world of Shakespeare without the “thou” and “thee” confusion, the Atlanta Shakespeare Company has got you covered with “Tempest Jr.” from June 26-28.
This 45-minute adaptation of The Tempest is a lively, family-friendly introduction to Shakespeare’s world. Imagine Prospero, a former duke with a knack for casting spells, on a mysterious island full of surprises. With four energetic actors and a playful cast of puppets, it’s a perfect first taste of Shakespeare for children Pre-K through 4th grade. And who knows, it might just inspire the next great playwright in your family.
But wait, there’s more! That Puppet Guy Productions is back with “The Big Bad, Little Red, Pig Show” from July 10-12. It’s a clever mash-up of childhood favorites—think Little Red Riding Hood meets the Three Little Pigs. It’s fast-paced, fun-filled, and full of catchy music and laughs. It’s the kind of show where you find yourself giggling along with the kids, and maybe even humming the tunes on the way home.
Finally, from July 17-19, Mr. Damon’s Shadow Puppet Theater presents “Adventures in Space!” Now, if you’ve never experienced the ancient magic of shadow puppetry, you’re in for a treat. Join Captain Mr. Damon and his trusty tardigrade co-pilot, Mossy, as they zoom through the galaxy, outsmart space pirates, and complete their mission to return home. It’s a cosmic quest that blends humor, music, and the enchanting skill of shadow puppetry. Perfect for families, school groups, and daycare field trips, it’s an adventure that’s truly out of this world.
So, there you have it, folks. A summer lineup that’s bursting with creativity, laughter, and a whole lot of fun. Whether you’re a puppet enthusiast, a science buff, or a budding Shakespearean, Roswell’s got something to tickle your fancy. So grab the kids, pack some snacks, and head on over for a day trip that’s sure to be the highlight of your summer. And who knows, you might just find yourself believing in a little bit of magic too.
