Why is 365 Atlanta Traveler writing about a town in Colorado well over 1,000 miles away? We actually have a lot of great Colorado content like this Christmas piece. The reason? Cheap, easy and direct flights between Atlanta and Denver.
As an avid snowboarder who grew up in New Jersey, Vermont used to be my go-to ski destination. After moving to Atlanta, Denver and Salt Lake City became the obvious choice. As I write this, round trip tickets to Denver from Atlanta are under $300.
When it comes to Colorado mountain towns, Breckenridge tops our list for the most quaint, beautiful, and best place to visit in the holiday season.
Snowy mountain towns are soul healing. Here’s a few great reasons to visit Breckenridge this year, before or after Christmas. Whether you’re a ski family or not.
- The Lighting of Breckenridge and Race of the Santas – December 7th – Hundreds of runners racing down Main Street dressed in Santa suits is not a sight to be missed. Festivities abound throughout town including the Handmade Holiday Market in the Breck Create Arts District, a performance of the Nutcracker: Land of the Sweets by the Alpine Dance Academy and a meet-and-greet with Santa Claus. - Ullr Fest – December 12th-14th – For a bountiful year of snowfall, Ullr, the Norse god of Snow must be praised! Breckenridge will attempt to reclaim the title of World’s Longest Shotsk® as the kickoff to an evening of revelry, including the Ullr Parade, the crowning of the Ullr King and Queen, and the Ullr Bonfire with the Red Bull monster truck blasting rowdy music for snow-dancing. The NEW Ullr Eve History Tour walks guests through the 62-year history of the Kingdom of Breckenridge’s most unique event. Link here.
- International Snow Sculpture Championships – January 20th-29th, 2024 – Frozen wonders appear in Breckenridge like magic each January, as twelve teams from around the world create works of art from the snow. Across 94 hours of sculpting, these artists will work day and night to delight spectators with massive ephemeral sculptures and seek first prize in this international competition. Here’s that link again!
- Music, Performances, and Visual Arts All Winter – Celebrate Valentine’s Day at the Riverwalk Center where four-time Grammy winner Lyle Lovett will perform. In March, the beloved Ukrainian tradition of Pysanky Easter egg decorating will once again be offered in the Arts District. Throughout the season, tap into theatrical performances at the Breckenridge Backstage Theatre, and enjoy arts classes with Breck Create. Link here.
