From the lively Fasching Festival and the soulful Songwriters Festival to the springtime tradition of Volksmarch and the highly anticipated return of tubing the Chattahoochee River on Memorial Day weekend, there’s always something exciting happening in Alpine Helen.

Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a music lover or just looking to experience unique cultural events, Alpine Helen is sure to be an unforgettable getaway. Here’s an overview of some of Alpine Helen’s most loved springtime events.

Fasching in February

February brings what is known as Fasching, the German Mardi Gras celebration. Celebrate German Mardi Gras with music, dancing and lots of cultural fun.

This colorful celebration features a host of German favorites including bratwurst with kraut, hot dogs, barbecue, pretzels and so much more. From live music and dancing to elaborate costumes and festive table décor, Fasching is a must when visiting Alpine Helen in February.

Songwriters Festival in Spring

Music has always thrived in Appalachia and the city of Helen showcases this through the Alpine Helen Songwriters Festival. Happening each year in the spring, this ever-popular festival brings top, award-winning songwriters from Nashville and around the state of Georgia to perform and tell stories through their music.

This three-day festival features events happening at various spots around town giving attendees the rare opportunity to hear talented songwriters play small venues. Stay tuned to this site for more information about this year’s festival details. 

Volksmarch in April

For those who love to explore the outdoors, the Volksmarch is not to be missed. Sponsored by the Alpine Helen Volksmarsch Club, the Helen Rotary Club, Perdido Key Volksmarsch & Walking Club and various other area sponsors, the Alpine Helen Volkswanderung 5K or 10K walk/hike is a unique event that gives participants the opportunity to choose their own distance, 5K (3.1 miles) or 10K (6.2 miles).

The 5K walk takes place on sidewalks and paved walkways from Helen to Hardman Farm and back. This family-friendly event gives participants the chance to experience stunning views of the mountains and rivers while taking part in a fun Bavarian event. The event culminates with traditional Bavarian foods, bier, refreshments, music and more. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the arrival of spring! Tubing in Helen in Summer

For many, the return of tubing the Chattahoochee River on Memorial Day weekend is the highlight of the end of the spring season. There’s no better place to usher in summer than tubing along the Chattahoochee—or as the locals call it, “shoot the ‘hooch!” Whether you are looking for a leisurely float with friends or the thrill of a faster current, this quintessential start of summer activity is fun for the whole family.
