Experience the Thrill of Youth Track Cycling at the Dick Lane Velodrome

Have you heard of the Dick Lane Velodrome? You may not even know Atlanta has a velodrome. Heck, you may not even know what a velodrome is. But we assure you that after reading this, you’ll be interested in checking it out for yourself! Don’t miss the thrill!

Dick Lane Velodrome Youth Cycling Program

Imagine a running track that looks more like a bowl, with a 36-degree banking, and that’s what Dick Lane Velodrome looks like. This is not the same track that was used in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics– however, the Dick Lane Velodrome was created long before in 1974. It is located in East Point, just south of Downtown Atlanta.

Track cycling at the Atlanta velodrome is different from any other type of cycling, not just because the racers are riding on a closed, circular track, but because the bikes themselves have no brakes or gears. While it sounds scary, the track is one of the safest places for riders!

Come to Ride – Join the Youth Cycling League at the Dick Lane Velodrome

The Youth Cycling League is coached by licensed coaches who are experienced bicycle riders and racers themselves. Kids will learn how to safely operate their bikes first on the flat apron of the track, then will progress to riding on the banked track. At each Youth Cycling League, kids will have the opportunity to compete under the close supervision of their coaches nightly and under the lights during the Pro Race Series events.

How to Get Started

  • The Youth Cycling League is for any kid, ages 8-16.
  • No previous experience is necessary. The track will provide bikes and helmets to all participants. Just come wearing athletic apparel and close-toed shoes.
  • The program is free to attend.
  • The Youth Cycling League has new changes to the program this year. Kids will be divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced categories. The beginner program starts at 5:15 p.m. and an intermediate program begins at 6:30 p.m. The advanced class is only on Thursday’s starting at 7:30p.m. The program is every Monday and Thursday from Daylights Savings in March through end of October.

While the Youth Cycling League program is a free program for participants, we do appreciate your support to make a once-yearly suggested donation of $50 but only if family finances allow.
