Visit Athens, Georgia Without the Drive

NOTE: This event has been postponed. We’ll keep you updated with a new date when we get it!

Proud dad of two University of Georgia graduates here. (Go Dawgs!) I’ve made the trip to Athens more times than I can count on my arm hairs. It’s a pretty neat city, and especially unique as compared to other Georgia towns. Believe it or not there are quite a few residents of the Atlanta metro who have never been, or at least not in some time.

Later this month you’ll have the chance to catch up on what’s been happening in our favorite college town without ever leaving the metro.

On Saturday, May 18th Avalon in Alpharetta is home to Amp It Up Athens, an event designed to bring the spirit of Athens to the good people of Atlanta who just haven’t made the drive – and to those who have.

Athens attractions will take over the The Plaza at Avalon from 11am to 8pm. The event includes a combination of the food, drink, art, music and other attractions that make Athens so special.

Here’s a rundown of the types of activities you can expect at Amp It Up Athens.

  • The Beer – Have a beer or three and choose from any of Athens’ six craft breweries. As Amp It Up says, you can practically travel the Athens Beer Trail without taking a step. Creature Comforts or Terrapin ring a bell? Beer will be served from noon to 7pm.
  • The Botanics – The State Botanical Gardens of Georgia is located in Athens and they’re bringing seed packs for the whole family along with info on how to enjoy the gardens on your next visit, which is always free!
  • The Art – They’re bringing the Athens artsy community straight to you, which is as eclectic as a college town art community should be. The Georgia Museum of Art will be there and they’re bringing items for button making and artist trading cards and featuring a live, interactive mural, and face painting. (Go Dawgs!)
  • The Food – Oh, the food. From Pama Yu’s Pete Amadhanirundr, James Beard Best Chef award semi-finalist to Kenny Nguyen, The Expat’s Top Chef competitor, Athens is top notch in the food scene. Can confirm. Jittery Joes and Condor Chocolates are on the docket
  • The Music – You’re all aware of those world famous Athens bands R.E.M., the B-52s and Widespread Panic. Well, they won’t be there. But some other up and coming, super-talented bands will be. AD Blanco and Hotel Fiction are playing at sunset, around 7PM

Visit Amp it Up on May 18th to get your own taste of Athens first hand. When you do, I’ll bet you’ll get to the real deal soon.
