‘A Mirror Maze’ and Other Summer Activities at Fernbank

Fernbank Museum is heating up this summer with two exciting, new special exhibits; new giant screen films; themed Discovery Days; science night events and more.

From nature explorations to three floors of indoor experiences, Fernbank’s summer programming will demonstrate the beauty and hidden stories of our natural world through an action-packed lineup of events and experiences.

Kicking off the primary theme of the summer programming is the opening of “A Mirror Maze: Numbers in Nature” on June 8.

The new special exhibit is an interactive and immersive experience that highlights common types of patterns found in nature and beyond.

The crown jewel of this exhibit is an impressive 1,700 square-foot mirror maze in which you and the family can explore and navigate a seemingly infinite repeating pattern of mirrors.

Later in June, the outdoor art exhibit “Forest Forms,” will be on view in WildWoods. From June 29 – Sept. 29 you can explore 18 larger-than-life metal sculptures of flowers and animals ranging from 5 to 20 feet tall.

Atlanta-based artist Huelani Mei captures her distinct line work style through sculptures of a fox family, rabbits, a dramatic snake archway and more.

Also new this summer is the nighttime series, “Fernbank… but Later.”

Fernbank is expanding its evening offerings to include an exciting, curiosity-driven event that will bring interesting scientific themes into Atlanta’s buzzing summertime social scene.

The events offer experiences that are engaging for all ages, especially adults. Light bites and drinks will be available for purchase, including options for non-alcoholic beverages and other libations for those who are ages 21 and up.

Fernbank will host “Go for the Gold” from July 26 – 28. If you’re feeling inspired by the Olympic Games, you can compete in Fernbank’s own summer science games by participating in a variety of events, such physical activities, challenging their coordination, testing their memory of country flags and more.

Then show your achievements with a special podium photo op. We’ll share more when it becomes available.

Beat the heat and enjoy two captivating films this summer in the Giant Screen Theater: “Superhuman Body: World of Medical Marvels,” narrated by Academy Awardwinner Matthew McConaughey, shares how the innerworkings of our bodies respond to ground-breaking innovations in science and technology.

Then, opening in 3D on June 21, the prehistoric, action-packed film “T. REX” allows you to witness a once-in-a-lifetime paleontological discovery along with CGI renderings that bring the T. rex back to life on a four-story high screen.

For those with sensory sensitivities, Fernbank is hosting a Sensory Morning on Saturday, Aug. 3.

Enjoy early museum access starting at 9 a.m. and experience the exhibits in an uncrowded environment and at their own pace. Additionally, a film will be shown with modified lighting, lowered volume and no need for 3D glasses.

Reptile Day, one of the most anticipated events of the year, will be coming back this summer on July 20. Fernbank’s educators and partner organizations will highlight the world of herpetology from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. You can get face-to-face with a variety of scaly, spiny and spectacular animals in the wild world of reptiles, amphibians and more.
